Ayodele's 2nd Semester Spring 2020 Course Work Demonstration Page

Welcome to my Course Presentation Page for the second semester of this school period.
My name is Ayodele Duduyemi. I am 13 years old, in the 8th grade and I live in Atlanta Georgia.
I like playing tennis, making YouTube videos, and making music. The courses I'm enrolled in are
FLP (Family Lore Project), Awesome Algebra 1, Melanin Mastery, ECMC Mathematics Competition,
and Economic Conundrum. On this page, I'll talk about my key learning's, difficulties, most enjoyable,
and easiest. I will also present excerpts from my work during this semester. Thank you for taking the
time to visit my page. Please take time to review my presentations and writing below, and comment or
rate my work. Please note: thoughtful comments include both what you like, what you learned
(if anything), and how I might improve. Thanks again. :)

Awesome Algebra 1

Key learning:

My key learning was learning how to factor. At first, factoring seemed like it was going to be simple
and an easy thing for me to do, but as I learned more about the different things that you can factor and
the different ways you have to factor them, I realized that factoring was absolutely not as simple as I
thought it was. It took some time but I got better at factoring. I still have a little trouble, but I am
much better at it then I was when I first started.

Most Enjoyable:

The most enjoyable thing for me was watching my classmate’s videos. After we finish learning
about a part of math, like factoring, we make videos about what we learned.
I like watching them because I like to see how my classmates choose to present the stuff that we
learned. Doing this also helps me to come up with ideas on how I can make my videos more interesting.

Most Difficult:

The most difficult thing for me was factoring trinomials. Factoring was a little hard for me but
factoring trinomials was the thing that was very difficult. The steps were easy to understand but
when I went to do a problem I either had trouble remembering the steps or I had trouble with applying
the steps to the problem. I still have some trouble with factoring trinomials, but compared to when I
first learned how to factor trinomials I have gotten better.

Easiest:
The easiest thing for me was when we did square roots. This was easy because square roots involve a
lot of multiplication and I am good at multiplication. Every square root related thing we talked about,
like perfect squares or the radical quotient rule, had a part that had to do with multiplication. My good
multiplication skills helped me to be able to complete the square root problems quicker then I would
have if I was not good at multiplication.

My presentation:

Melanin Mastery

Key learning:

My key learning was learning about the things you need to do and eat to boost your immune system.
Because we are currently facing a pandemic it is important to make sure that our Immune Systems stay
strong so that we can stay healthy. One of the most important things that you need to do is to go out in
the sun at midday every single day for thirty minutes so you can get ten thousand international units of
vitamin D. Another thing you need to do is to avoid eating things with high concentrations of sugar.
You also need to eat things that give you fifty to one hundred milligrams of Zinc a day, three thousand
milligrams of vitamin C a day, two hundred milligrams of flavonoids a day, ten thousand to twenty
thousand international units of vitamin A a day, eight hundred milligrams of vitamin E ad and one
hundred milligrams of vitamin B6 a day. After learning this my parents stopped buying things with
a lot of sugar and started buying more things that would help boost our Immune Systems.

Most Enjoyable:

The most enjoyable thing for me was when we learned about Alo Melanin. I enjoyed this because it
made me realize how many plants have melanin in them. Green tea and grapes are two things that I
like to have and have melanin in them. Before I found this
out I thought that a good amount of food that contains high concentrations of melanin would not taste
good at all. I’m not sure exactly why I thought that, but now that I know that there are things that I like
that contain melanin, I can use that fact to convince my parents to get more of it. That means that I will
get to eat the things that I enjoy without my parents complaining about the price or how much I eat the
things that I enjoy.

Most Difficult:

The most difficult thing for me was remembering what neurulation was and the things that come from
that. Neurulation is when the neural tube is being formed. This happens in the third week of gestation.
Then the neural tube becomes the spinal cord, the brain, and the central nervous system. I understood
the proses and I knew what the spinal cord, brain, and central nervous system were, but for some
reason, it took a while for me to be able to remember this process. Eventually, I found a way to
remember all of this information. All I had to do was remember that the neural tube became almost
everything that is in the middle of your body.

Easiest:

The easiest thing for me was learning about melanin in the eye. This was pretty easy because my mom
has had a lot of eye surgeries which means that she knows a good amount of things about the eye and
how it works. Melanin is in three places in your eye, the iris, the retina, and the choroid. The melanin
in these three places helps you to be able to see clearly. Over the years my mom has taught me about
the things that your eye does so you will be able to see. Because of that, I was already pretty familiar
with the fact that melanin was in the eye. I didn’t know what melanin did in the eye or where melanin
was located in the eye, but just knowing that melanin was in the eye made learning about it easier for
me.

My presentation:

ECMC Mathematics Competition

Key learning:

My key learning was learning what you needed to include in order to make a math jeopardy game. I
never made or helped make a jeopardy game but what I learned was that you need at least five
categories, four questions for each category and all of the questions need to be either one hundred, two
hundred, three hundred or five hundred points.

Most Enjoyable:

The most enjoyable part for me was seeing the end result of the jeopardy game. It took a little while for
me and my classmates to put together the game but in the end, it turned out pretty good and I can’t
wait for people to play it.

Most Difficult:

The most difficult thing for me was making the Economic Conundrum jeopardy questions. In our
jeopardy game, there is an Economic Conundrum section. In that section, there are questions that are a
mix between what we learned in Economic Conundrum and what we learned in ECMS. Two of the
things we covered in ECMC are word problems and percents. The question that I made for this section
had to do with percents. Making an EC math question was kind of difficult because I had to make
something that I learned, that everybody might not know and put it into a percent question in a way
that made sense.

Easiest:

There wasn’t an easy thing for me. Everything we did with the game was equally hard except for the
EC questions. I put the same amount of energy into all the other steps and all of the steps were all
pretty hard for me to do.

My presentation:

Economic Conundrum

Key learning:

My key learning was learning about CDOs. CDOs are Collateralized Debt Obligations. Learning what
these are, how they were made, and what the investment banks did with them gave me more insight
into what my parents had to fight. My parents sued JP Morgan Chase and started the fight when I was
about six. At that time I didn’t know what was going on, all I knew was that both my mom and dad
were suddenly very busy and didn’t have as much time to play with me. As I got older I was able to
understand a little more about the fight but I still didn’t understand all of it. They did not have to fight
about CDOs but they did have to fight something very similar to that. After learning about CDOs I had
a way better understanding of the type of stuff my mom and dad had to deal with. It became clear to
me why they spent so much time on the case and how important it was.

Most Enjoyable:

The most enjoyable thing for me was drawing a picture of some of the things that black people did better than
white people. Some of those things are fishing, hunting, and farming. I enjoyed this because I like to
make art and this assignment allowed me to practice making my art look good while conveying
important points.

Most Difficult:

The most difficult thing for me was writing an essay on the banksters or more specifically the inside
job. The Inside Job is a documentary about the great recession. The essay was supposed to say why the
default of subprime loans by black people was not the cause of the recession like the white people like
to say. Proving that black people defaulting on the loans did not cause the recession was not the
difficult part. The difficult part was watching the documentary and taking good enough notes so that I
would be able to back up what I said up with dates and other things like that.

Easiest:

The easiest thing for me was reading and taking notes on the first chapter of the book Slave Culture by
Sterling Stuckey. This was easy because I found a way of taking notes that were easier for me and
because a good amount of the things he talked about in the first chapter I was already familiar with.
There were some new things that I didn’t know, like how some Africans buried their dead family
members under their houses so that they would become a part of the foundation physically and
spiritually. But for the most part, I knew or had heard of most of the things he was talking about.
I just got more detail about those things.

My presentation:

This is my paper on how white people caused the great recession.

Family Lore Project

Key learning:

My key learning was re-learning the 5c’s of storytelling. The 5c’s of storytelling are circumstance,
curiosity, characters, conversation, and conflict. The 5c’s helped me to put more detail into the stories
that I collected from my family. If there was not a part of the story that fit into any of the 5c’s then that
told me that I needed to go back to the person who gave me the story so I could get more information.

Most Enjoyable:

The most enjoyable thing for me was seeing pictures of my family. Family lore can be oral, written,
and also pictures. This year I got a lot of stories and pictures that went along with those stories from
my family. Most of the pictures were of people who passed before I was born. Sometimes there were
pictures of people who passed before my mom was born. Seeing those pictures and hearing the stories
that when along with them made me feel closer to my family.

Most Difficult:

The most difficult thing for me was making sure that I wrote or rewrote the stories that I got from my
family in a way that included all of the 5c’s. This was hard because if the story did not have all of the
5c’s then I would either have to find a way to switch the story around so that I could add in the missing
c’s, go back to my family and ask specific questions to try to get the information that I needed or I
would have to get or use another story. Doing any of these three things would take a good amount of
additional time and I would have to keep myself focused so that I would be able to finish writing the
story. But at the end of it, all the 5c's of storytelling made my stories more interesting and full detail
that I would not have if I did not use the 5c’s when writing my stories.

Easiest:

The easiest thing for me was getting in contact with my family so I could get stories. Because of
quarantine a lot of my family was not busy at work like they normally would be. This was good
because it meant that I could call them and they would most likely pick up. It also meant that they
were available if I had any questions and needed more information.

My presentation:

This is a story that I got from my mom about her and my dad’s first dance at their wedding.

At the first dance at me and your dad's wedding, we played “your just to good to be true” by Lauryn
Hill. For the entire day, the DJ had been playing jazz and a lot of the people there, especially my father
liked the music. Music was a very important part of the wedding to us so your dad researched every
song that we played. When it was time for the first dance the DJ turned off the jazz and started playing
Lauryn Hill, everyone started groning. But all of a sudden the groning stopped when the lyrics started
and then everyone started to go “aww”. This made me so annoyed.
My reflection:
My mother's expression after telling me this story was priceless. She looked a little annoyed, happy,
and sad at the same time. A majority of the people there were my grandparents or great grandparents
and they all loved jazz so it didn't surprise me when she said that at first, they did not approve of that
song by Lauryn Hill. After hearing this story I realized that half of the time both of my parents have
the same reaction to the music that I listen to that my grandparents had to you're just too good to be
true before it got to the lyrics. When we have basically nothing to do, me, my mom and my dad
sometimes play what we call the music game. Someone picks a category in music and then all three of
us have to find a song that fits in that category. Then we listen to each song and decide which one was
the best. A lot of times when I play the song that I chose my parents to give a partly disapproving look
or say something like “I don’t know about that one” with is kind of the same thing that my grand and
great parents did at my mom and dads wedding.

Fantastic job throughout! Every essay is well-considered, well-thought out and well-researched. My favorite, though, was the Algebra. I loved working through these problems as a kid. It's been so long, though, I didn't remember how anymore. Thanks so much for teaching me all over again!

Thank you Ayo. Your essays were concise and well written. I injoyed the necessity of creativity in your learning, particularly in Jeopardy Game and Family Lore. Also, the essay on Melanin and eyes was informative. Thank you for sharing the joy of learning with teachers who know, challenge and nurture brilliance of all our children. Congratulations Ayo, Family, Community and AYA.

Ayo, what a super job you’ve done on your project. I particularly liked your explanation of the melanin and the eye.
My suggestion however is to reread this for a few grammatical mistakes. I know that you will find them. There are not many. Example using then instead of than.

One thing that I forgot; I like the way you explain things. It makes it so easy to understand the concept that you are explaining. Even I learned a few things.
I really love all the things you have to say about your classes!
